Description:

Fritz Thomas founded 'Porzellanfabrik Thomas & Ens' in Marktredwitz, Germany in 1904. His partner Ens was primarily an investor and left the day-to-day running of the business with Thomas.
In 1908 Ens left the company which enabled Rosenthal to become the major shareholder. 'Porzellanfabrik Thomas' operated as an independent subsidiary of Rosenthal.

In 1959/60 porcelain production was transferred to a new site in Speichersdorf (Upper Franconia) when lack of space became an issue. The Marktredwitz factory continued to be used for the production of technical ceramics.

Up to the 1980's the Thomas product range was predominantly influenced by Scandinavian design but during the 1990's adopted new design influences from London.

About the Tea Set:

We could not resist this tea-set when we saw it a number of years ago, since when it has lain in a box hiding its iconic style under a bushel. Made by the German company Thomas it is in grey & black china. The "V" shaped cups are in dove grey with blue saucers, the side plates are in dove grey, the handleless conical milk jug is dove grey, the broad conical sugar bowl has a grey base and a blue conical lid and the crowning glory of the set is the conical tea pot that is in dove grey with a blue lid and a black metal handle and it has a black china teapot stand with conical feet. There is a very Japanese feel to the design. Underneath the base of each piece is a stoneware disc stamped "Thomas Germany Atelier Collection" Thomas China 1903 Founding of the company by Fritz Thomas in Marktredwitz, Upper Franconia. 1908 Takeover of the porcelain factory “F. Thomas, Marktredwitz” by Rosenthal. 1960 Relocation of the porcelain production to Speichersdorf, Upper Franconia – “Thomas am Kulm”. Up until the 1980s the THOMAS collections was characterised by Scandinavian design. 1981 Launch of the “Trend” range from the Queensberry Hunt school of design. Since the end of the 1980s Thomas turned to new design directions, marked by a new functional and plain design. 1996 Launch of the “Sunny Day” and the “Vario” range by Yellow Design. 1999 The Amici pasta dish becomes a Thomas top seller. 2001 Launch of the "Loft“ range, design by Queensberry Hunt. 2013 The Sunny Day range receives a successful re-launch with the Sunny Day Concept; Thomas becomes a brand combining everyday design and functionality with lifestyle. 2015: The Kitchen by Thomas range is winner of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015, IF Design Award 2016 and German Design Award 2016. 2016 Launch of the clever “ONO” series, winner of several international awards.
