Hyaluronic acid is a top-of-the-range active ingredient, very effective at low doses. It is known for its intense moisturizing and plumping power. It is the essential ingredient of lifting, tensing and reshaping treatments as well as anti-wrinkle moisturising creams for the face and décolleté.
First discovered in the vitreous humor of the eye in 1934, then synthesized in vitro in 1964, hyaluronic acid, which is mainly found in the extracellular matrix, is known for its regulating activities with regard to epidermal proliferation and for its great capacity to retain water.
Despite its simple structure, many other biological functions of hyaluronic acid have been discovered. Not only does it act as a biological glue that participates in the lubrication of joints or helps to maintain the cohesion of certain connective tissues, it also functions as a micro-environmental signal that co-regulates cellular behaviour during embryonic development, morphogenesis, wound healing, repair and regeneration.
Hyaluronic acid is found throughout the body in its physiological state, but 50% is concentrated in the skin; there are 15 grams of hyaluronic acid in a 70 kg individual, of which 5 grams are replaced every day, due to its rapid degradation. The stock of hyaluronic acid is naturally and constantly renewed, but the rate of this renewal decreases with age and external aggressions. It is therefore necessary to act very early, maintaining an optimal renewal of hyaluronic acid, similar to that of young skin.
